(ThePatriotSource.com)- No one escapes the wrath of New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez — not even the leader of her own party.
On Tuesday, AOC went off on President Joe Biden for his administration’s decision to re-open a Texas facility that holds migrant children. The facility in Carrizo Springs, Texas, was opened and operated for just one month in the summer of 2019 under former President Donald Trump. Now, current President Biden is reactivating it to hold as many as 700 children between the ages of 13 and 17.
Officials within the Biden administration say they’re re-opening the facility because other facilities have cut their capacity in half because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. At the same time, unaccompanied children crossing into the United States through the Southern border have increased. In January, it reached a recent high of more than 5,700 children.
That drew the ire of AOC, who tweeted:
“This is not okay, never has been okay, never will be okay — no matter the administration or party. It’s only 2 mos into this admin & our fraught, unjust immigration system will not transform in that time. That’s why bold reimagination is so impt.”
Then, the progressive representative took aim at other federal agencies such as the Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. In a separate tweet, she wrote:
“DHS shouldn’t exist, agencies should be reorganized, ICE gotta go, ban for-profit detention, create climate refugee status & more.”
What, exactly, she is talking about is anyone’s guess. How any of that would solve the problem of how to deal with undocumented, unaccompanied children crossing into the United States illegally is also anyone’s guess.
Other immigration experts chimed in on the criticism of Biden’s decision. Linda Brandmiller, who’s an immigration lawyer based in San Antonio who often represents unaccompanied minors, said of the reopening of the facility:
“It’s unnecessary, it’s costly, and it goes absolutely against everything Biden promised he was going to do. It’s a step backward, is what it is. It’s a huge step backward.”
While Biden has reversed many Trump-era policies when it comes to immigration in only his first month in office, this move seems to go counter to all of that. Just last week, Biden along with House Democrats unveiled their plan to provide a citizenship path for as many as 11 million immigrants who are undocumented.
Mark Weber, who is the Department of Health and Human Services’ spokesman, said the Biden administration is moving away from Trump’s “law-enforcement focused” approach to immigration. He said the administration would be focusing more on what he called child welfare.
Of housing these children, Weber said a permanent center would be much more ideal. For now, though, there was no choice but for the government to put them in the influx shelters such as this one in Carrizo Springs and another in Homestead.
He also commented on how the immigration system needs to be fixed when he said:
“Every kid that comes into this program is a symptom of a broken immigration system. So today, we’ve got over 7,000 symptoms of a broken immigration system.”
