(ThePatriotSource.com)- New York Governor Andrew Cuomo attempted to divert the blame for the huge number of coronavirus deaths in nursing homes across his state away from state government and onto President Donald Trump and the Centers for Disease Control. Cuomo claimed that the deaths occurred as a result of him following the guidance offered by the Trump administration and the CDC.
In recent weeks, Cuomo has been at the center of a controversy relating to the huge number of people who have died in nursing homes for elderly and vulnerable people. He was forced to reverse a directive that was put in place on March 25 which allowed people to be readmitted to nursing homes even if they were diagnosed with coronavirus.
“No resident shall be denied re-admission or admission to the NH [nursing home] solely based on a confirmed or suspected diagnosis of COVID-19,” the directive said. “NHs are prohibited from requiring a hospitalized resident who is determined medically stable to be tested for COVID-19 prior to admission or readmission.”
The directive resulted in a huge number of people dying in nursing homes as the virus entered with infected patients and quickly spread to other residents and careworkers. Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik of New York said this week that a federal investigation into Cuomo’s conduct should take place to determine how this happened. On Tuesday, New York state data showed how more than 5,800 residents of nursing homes and adult care facilities had died of the Chinese virus.
In a press conference, Governor Cuomo was asked how he felt about the call for a federal investigation into his handling of the virus.
“Look, this is a political season, I get it. I have refrained from politics,” he said. “I’m not going to get into the political back and forth, but anyone who wants to ask why did the state do that with COVID patients and nursing home, it’s because the state followed President Trump’s CDC guidance. So they should ask President Trump. I think that will stop the conversation.”
When Cuomo was asked if he is “fudging the numbers,” he repeated his claim that he simply followed guidance from the CDC.
He was then asked by a reporter why he wasn’t willing to “thwart” president Trump when he issued the March 25th memo, and if he regrets it.
“No, not at all,” he responded.
