(ThePatriotSource.Com)- President Donald Trump and his administration have been working tirelessly with medical professionals and leading organizations throughout the country to not only stop the spread of the coronavirus, but to treat people who have it.
On Thursday, Trump announced at a press conference that the FDA has approved using a malaria drug to treat the coronavirus, known as COVID-19. He called the discovery and approval by the FDA a “tremendous breakthrough.” He said:
“[It’s] a drug called chloroquine, and some people would add to that ‘hydroxy.’ Hydroxychloroquine. Now this is a common malaria drug. It’s also a drug used for [serious] arthritis … But it is known as a malaria drug, and it’s been around for a long time.
“We know that if things don’t go as planned, it’s not going to kill anyone … And it’s shown very, very encouraging early results.”
Researchers from France revealed a few days before Trump’s announcement that they were able to treat COVID-19 patients successfully with both azithromycin and hydroxychloroquine. Trump announced the hydroxychloroquine would be available to people “almost immediately” and would be given as a prescription medication.
Trump further praised Stephen Hahn, the FDA commissioner, and the entire FDA, calling them all “incredible patriots.”
Beyond just the treatment of coronavirus, the medical community has been working around the clock to see if they’d be able to discover a vaccine for COVID-19. While that would seem to be a longshot to happen and take effect fast enough to stop the spread of the coronavirus, Trump did sound optimistic that a vaccine would be discovered and developed.
Even Trump, though, admitted that a vaccine would need to be tested thoroughly to make sure it wouldn’t harm those who took it in the long run. That being said, the Trump administration has “slashed red tape” so different therapies and vaccines can be developed.
As he explained:
“As you know, earlier this week, we began the first clinical trial of a vaccine candidate for the virus, and it was launched in record time. It was just a few weeks and that would have taken years to do, not so long ago.”
Even still, people have to realize that clinical trials alone can take quite a lot of time to accomplish, just to make sure “bad things” don’t go into their bodies, as Trump emphasized.
The United States is not the only country that has been forced to deal with the coronavirus outbreak that started in Wuhan, China. “The whole world, almost, has been inflicted with this terrible virus,” Trump said.
South Korea and Iran were two of the hardest-hit countries after that, followed by Italy — which has seen perhaps the gravest situation of any country yet. They have been forced to put the country on a complete lockdown following the outbreak there.
Other countries in Europe such as Spain, France and now Germany are dealing with the outbreak, along with the United States. It seems like no place on Earth will be immune to the spread of the disease.
