ATF Guidance On AR-15 Pistols Could Affect Millions Of Americans

( A new proposal could require millions of Americans who own firearms like AR-15s to register, turn in, destroy, or dismantle their guns. The proposal, revealed by the Washington Free Beacon, comes from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), and will be championed by Joe Biden should be become president on January 20.

As if the proposed regulation wasn’t enough, the Beacon also described how it contains no specifics in regards to how to objectively define the weapons that would be applicable.

On Thursday, the ATF published a notice that millions of firearm owners would need to come forward, without providing any objective measures about what would determine a weapon’s legality.

“But the standards laid out for determining the devices’ legality, such as caliber or weight, provide no objective measures, and the agency said it may use undisclosed factors to judge the legality of the devices,” the Beacon reported.

The ATF reportedly conceded within its notice that some pistol braces cannot be subject to the registration requirements as they are legal, but that they still could not offer a blanket determination for which braces or pistols are legal. It would mean that practically all of the roughly four million AR-15 pistols and firearms deemed to be similar would need to be registered with the ATF.

Whether they’re legal or not.

In a statement, senior vice president of Gun Owners of America Erich Pratt said that the agency had “gone off into the deep end.”

“GOA will rally the grassroots to fight these regulations, and if they eventually go into effect, we will commence immediate legal action to protect gun owners.”

The plan, which was pushed by Joe Biden throughout his 2020 presidential campaign, would require the owners of short-barrel rifles and shotguns to pay $200 in tax for every gun they own.

For those who register their firearms during a “grace period” that will be announced soon, the payment of the tax will be waved, showing that the intention is simply to get gun owners to register their guns.

If it’s an effort to stop people from using their guns for criminal acts, owing to the fear of getting caught, then why didn’t the ATF consider the likelihood that only responsible legal gun owners would comply with the law and criminals…not comply?
