Amy Klobuchar Removes Name From Consideration As Joe Biden’s Running Mate

( You can strike another potential running mate from Joe Biden’s shortlist.

Last week, Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar announced she was withdrawing her name from consideration as Biden’s running mate. She said the presumptive Democratic nominee for president should choose a woman of color to be his running mate.

Speaking with MSNBC last week, she said:

“After what I’ve seen in my state and what I’ve seen across the country, this is a historic moment and America must seize the moment. I truly believe, as I actually told the vice president last night when I called him, that I think this is a moment to put a woman of color on that ticket. And there are so many incredibly qualified women, but if you want to heal this nation right now, my party … this is sure a hell of a way to do it.”

Some women on Biden’s reported shortlist who would fit the bill are California Senator Kamala Harris, Illinois Senator Tammy Duckworth, Florida Representative Val Demings, Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, and Susan Rice, a former national security adviser.

Also on Biden’s reported shortlist of running mates are Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren and Wisconsin Senator Tammy Baldwin.

While Biden has committed to choosing a woman as his running mate, he hasn’t committed to a woman of color. Just last month, he said:

“There are woman of color under consideration, and there are women from every part of the country under consideration because there are a lot of really qualified women that are ready to be president.

“But I’m not making that commitment. I’m going to make that judgment after in fact this group goes through interviewing all these people.”

Klobuchar, a former presidential candidate herself, was at one point considered a popular choice as Biden’s running mate. She was seen a moderate candidate that could help boost Biden’s draw in some midwestern states, while not ostracizing any one particular type of liberal voter.

But her past began to plague her as Black Lives Matter protests ignited across the country following the death of George Floyd at the hands of a Minneapolis police officer. Klobuchar’s history as a prosecutor is what started to bring criticism recently.

Back in 2002, she decided to prosecute a black teen for murder. She also previously failed to prosecute the Minneapolis police officer who killed Floyd, and that has drawn the ire of plenty of people. Charlamagne the God, a radio host, said black turnout would be depressed for Biden if he were to choose Klobuchar as his running mate.

After Klobuchar made her decision public last week, Biden thanked her for all that she gave during the presidential campaign. He wrote on Twitter:

“Amy — from the moment you announced you were running for president in a snowstorm, it wasn’t hard to see you had the grit and determination to do anything you set your mind to. You know how to get things done. With your help, we’re going to beat Donald Trump.”
